A major IAEA meeting began 21 May 2013 to discuss ways to improve nuclear safety by addressing human and organizational behavior.

The International Experts' Meeting (IEM) on Human and Organizational Factors in Nuclear Safety in the Light of the Accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant will meet until 24 May 2013. It is part of a series of expert meetings held in connection with the implementation of the IAEA Action Plan on Nuclear Safety, endorsed by the Agency's General Conference in September 2011.

The IEM offers a forum to share knowledge and experience concerning human and organizational aspects of nuclear safety - in particular, the interactions between individuals, technology and organizations - as well as to identify lessons learned and best practices.

The meeting is chaired by Marta Ziakova, Chairperson of the Slovak Nuclear Regulatory Authority and attended by some 170 participants representing about 54 Member States and 9 international organizations.

Among other goals, the IEM aims to:

  • Identify ways to strengthen human and organizational aspects of nuclear safety in operating and regulatory organizations;
  • Analyse best practices developed from previous nuclear events; and
  • Exchange information on the interactions between individuals, technology and organizations and their influence on nuclear safety
