Meeting on the formulation of RCA's medium-term strategy for 2018-2023

From 16-20 February 2015, an expert group gathered in Vienna to discuss and formulate the Medium-Term Strategy, which covers the period of 2018-2023, of the Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology for Asia and the Pacific (RCA).

During the meeting, experts reviewed and assessed the implementation of the current RCA Medium-Term Strategy, covering 2012-2017, in addition to management of the RCA programme. The participants shared their views on the regional agreement's strategic directions and priorities for 2018-2023 and, in each thematic area, elaborated hiow the programme should be developed and managed. The meeting's attendees also discussed and agreed on a detailed outline for the RCA Medium-Term Strategy, which include follow-up actions and measures to be taken, namely a timeline for the further formulation and completion of the final draft RCA Medium-Term Strategy.

Background

The Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training Related to Nuclear Science and Technology for Asia and the Pacific (RCA) is an intergovernmental agreement among the IAEA Member States that are located in South Asia, South East Asia and the Pacific, and the Far East.

It was first established in 1972 under the auspices of the IAEA, to promote, coordinate and implement cooperative research, development and training projects in the peaceful application of nuclear science and technology amongst the parties to the RCA.

Currently, there are 21 parties to the RCA, namely: Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Republic of Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Palau, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Viet Nam.
