Assessment and prognosis
During a nuclear or radiological emergency, the factors and actions determining an effective response can change rapidly. Assessment of the situation and prognosis of how that emergency evolves will support effective emergency response.?
The IAEA bases its assessment and prognosis on technical information provided by the State in which the accident occurred, as well as on available evidence, scientific knowledge, the capabilities of Member States and clarifications with the ‘Accident State.’
The assessment and prognosis process builds on the existing international emergency preparedness and response framework and utilizes the IAEA’s own arrangements and capabilities, guidance and tools, as well as expert human resources, together with those of the IAEA’s Member States.
The Agency’s assessment does not replace or duplicate any national responsibility to respond to an emergency and protect the public but is internationally focused and based on the IAEA’s Safety Standards and guidance.
