Introducing diplomats from Member States to the principles of the international nuclear liability regime was the focus of a Workshop on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage hosted by the IAEA Office of Legal Affairs on 14 May 2018 and attended by 25 participants from 21 Member States.

In her opening address Ms Peri Lynne Johnson, Legal Adviser and Director of the Office of Legal Affairs, reminded participants of the relevant IAEA General Conference resolutions which repeatedly stress the importance of having in place effective and coherent nuclear liability mechanisms at the national and global level and encourage Member States to give due consideration to the possibility of joining the relevant international nuclear liability instruments. Hence the Workshop aimed at familiarizing participants with these instruments, their common features and differences and also provided an overview of the legislative assistance activities available to support Member States in this regard.

Ms. Adamantia Metaxaki from the Permanent Mission of Greece found the workshop, although covering a very specialized field, to be “very interesting and clear, addressing all relevant topics and very helpful even for non-specialists.”

IAEA Legal Officers were joined by experts from the International Experts group on Nuclear Liability (INLEX), the advisory body to the Director General and the Director of the Office of Legal Affairs on nuclear liability issues, to give presentations and participate in the discussions.
