IAEA experts use science-based tools to study both terrestrial and aquatic systems and evaluate the potential effects of pollution and climate change on the environment and on human health. The Agency assists Member States in treating nuclear waste and remediating contaminated sites. Nuclear technologies, such as nuclear power, can also help mitigate climate change. Stable isotopes and nuclear techniques are used to assess freshwater resources, biological systems, atmospheric processes and oceanic ecosystems, and to improve agricultural practices. These tools help evaluate ecological impacts on the environment, particularly to fingerprint natural and man-made pollution. The techniques can also help assess negative health effects of living in unsanitary environments.
