Nobel Peace Prize Awardee IAEA Director General ElBaradei To Meet Journalists in Vienna on Friday, 7 October 2005

Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei, will meet journalists in Vienna today on the occasion of winning the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize.

Dr. ElBaradei will hold a press conference at 13:30 in the Rotunda at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna International Centre.

The meeting is closed to the press.

The Board today adopted a resolution in reaction to the reports I made last week that Iran had restarted its conversion plant. The Board naturally expressed serious concern about Iran′s unilateral decision to restart its suspended program.

The Board made it clear that the suspension continues to be an important confidence building measure. It has continuously been the Board′s view that although this is a voluntary undertaking on the part of Iran, it is still an important confidence building measure in light of Iran′s past undeclared program.

The Board is meeting this afternoon to consider my latest report on resumption of activities at the Esfahan conversion facility. As you recall the Board has clearly stated in the past that although suspension of enrichment related and conversion activities in the Islamic Republic of Iran is a voluntary decision, none the less it is essential for confidence building and for resolution of outstanding issues relevant to Iran′s past undeclared nuclear activities.
