Marshall Islands designs its first TC Programme

The Republic of Marshall Islands joined the IAEA in 1994, however, it didn't seek to join the technical cooperation (TC) programme until recently. From 04-08 May 2015, a delegation from the Marshall Islands participated in a 'Project Design Meeting for the 2016-2017 TC Cycle,' which was held at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna, Austria. The main purpose of this meeting was to provide the Marshall Islands, a new TC recipient country, with the expertise, knowledge, and skills necessary to design their first TC programme in various fields of nuclear technologies.

The meeting participants, with the support of the Project Management Officer (PMO), Technical Officers (TOs) and other relevant IAEA staff, reviewed each project design document, enhanced their technical and managerial soundness, and finalised work plans and other project-related documents. By the end of the meeting, two high-quality project designs were uploaded to the online platform, PCMF.

The proposed programme clearly reflects the Marshall Islands national priorities. In the field of human health, a TC project will tackle the urgent need of improving the national radiology services. As for the environmental project, the Government of Marshall Islands aims to develop an independent national capacity to monitor artificial radiation in the marine, terrestrial and coastal environment.
