Nuclear Power in the 21st Century – International Ministerial Conference

30 October – 1 November 2017, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Host Government

The 2017 International Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Power in the 21st Century will be hosted by the Government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) through the Ministry of Energy and the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR). The UAE is in the final stages of construction of its first nuclear power plant, and the commissioning process is underway in 2017. IAEA Director General Amano has noted that in its nuclear power programme, the UAE has set positive examples of timely and comprehensive planning and implementation and shown a strong emphasis on safety. The UAE and the IAEA have collaborated for more than 40 years on the peaceful uses of nuclear technology and in recent years, this has included close cooperation on nuclear power infrastructure development.

Message from the President of the Conference

“A rapidly developing economy and rising demand for electricity prompted the UAE to embark on a peaceful nuclear energy programme in 2008. Nuclear power is safe, clean, and reliable technology that is expected to contribute up to 25% of peak electricity demand in the UAE by the year 2020.

In 2012, and in a historical move, UAE became the first ‘nuclear newcomer’ country in 27 years to start the construction of a nuclear reactor in a new programme. Now the UAE is in the final stages of construction of its first NPP with the commissioning process well underway. This will make the United Arab Emirates the first country in nearly three decades to commission a nuclear power plant as part of a new programme.

The UAE joined the IAEA in 1976 and when we look at our 40-year successful partnership with the IAEA covering various areas of cooperation—especially our close cooperation on nuclear power infrastructure development and the progress that we have made—we believe that the UAE is the perfect location for this important Conference and the Government of the United Arab Emirates is very pleased to host it.

We look forward to warmly welcome you in Abu Dhabi and for a successful conference.”
