Enhancing Global Nuclear Security Efforts

2013/17

From 1 to 5 July 2013 some 30 Ministers and over 1?000 participants from more than 100 States are meeting at the Headquarters of the IAEA in Vienna, Austria, to discuss ways to strengthen nuclear security worldwide. The risk that nuclear or other radioactive material could be used in malicious acts is regarded as a serious threat to international peace and security.

The IAEA has been active in the nuclear security field for several decades. Its Office of Nuclear Security maintains a global authoritative database which records incidents and trafficking involving nuclear and radioactive materials that are outside regulatory control.

The Agency also helps States to protect their nuclear facilities against terrorist attacks or acts of sabotage, to prevent nuclear and other radioactive materials from being stolen and sold, to secure borders, and to prepare for major public events that could be a target for criminal groups.
