IAEA to Host International Conference on Nuclear Security

2016/16

The International Atomic Energy Agency will host an International Conference on Nuclear Security: Commitments and Actions from 5 to 9 December 2016 at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna. The event will provide an inclusive forum for government ministers, policymakers and experts to review the current status of international nuclear security and exchange views on future priorities for strengthening it.

More than 1900 participants have registered for the conference, representing more than 130 IAEA Member States and 17 international, regional and non- governmental organizations.

Coming three years after the IAEA’s first international conference on nuclear security, it will feature two main parts: a ministerial segment at which Member States are expected to adopt a Ministerial Declaration on the first day; and a scientific and technical programme comprising high-level policy discussions on key themes related to nuclear security as well as parallel technical sessions on specialized issues. Topics include: national legislative and regulatory frameworks; threat and risk assessment; insider threats; physical protection of nuclear and radioactive materials; combatting illicit trafficking of material; human resource development and capacity building, nuclear security culture; and computer security.

Press opportunities

The ministerial plenary sessions on the first and second day of the conference are open to media.

In addition, a news conference is due to be held in the M Building Press Room at about 5 p.m. on 5 December 2016, following the expected adoption of the Ministerial Declaration.

The M Building Press Room will be available as a press working area on the first day of the conference. Journalists may also monitor the plenary sessions on live video streaming.
