Parties to Nuclear Safety Convention Complete Fifth Review Meeting

2011/22

The 5th Review Meeting of the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) wraps up its 11-day meeting tomorrow, Thursday, 14 April 2011, at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarters in Vienna. The Review Meeting is held every three years.

The Convention entered into force on 24 October 1996 to enhance nuclear safety. Its objectives are to achieve and maintain a high level of nuclear safety worldwide; establish and maintain effective defences in nuclear installations against potential radiological hazards and prevent accidents having radiological consequences. There are 72 Contracting Parties to the Convention, including all countries with operating nuclear power plants.

Media Opportunities

Journalists will have two coverage opportunities on 14 April:

  • First, print journalists may attend the closing of the Final Plenary Session for the adoption of the meeting's Final Summary. Print journalists may enter Boardroom A of the Vienna International Centre's M-Building at about 08:00 UTC/10:00 CET, during a break in the proceedings.
  • Second, the Review Meeting Officers will hold a News Conference in Boardroom A after the Final Session. The News Conference is scheduled to begin around 09:30 UTC/11:30 CET. News cameras may enter Boardroom A when the Final Session ends, about 30 minutes before the News Conference. Cameras may set up behind the first row of tables.

Press Conference Participants

  • Review Meeting President, Li Ganjie (China)
  • Review Meeting Vice President, Bill Borchardt (USA)
  • Review Meeting Vice President, Patrick Majerus (Luxembourg)
  • IAEA Deputy Director General, Denis Flory (Representing the IAEA as the Review Meeting's Secretariat)

Audio/Visual Streaming

Journalists may also monitor the closing portions of the Review Meeting and the press conference from the M-Building's Press Room, where the proceedings will be streamed live.

In addition, the Press Conference will be available via audio streaming.

The audio stream is not an interactive channel. Its purpose is to provide the media an opportunity to listen to the Press Conference. It cannot be delivered in broadcast quality.

Language Interpretation

The CNS Meeting has simultaneous interpretation to all UN languages. For the News Cconference, the Review Meeting President will speak in Chinese and interpretation into English will be offered in both Boardroom A and the Press Room. Split boxes will offer audio in English only; broadcasters seeking Chinese audio will need to plug into the handheld devices available only in Boardroom A by using a standard 3.5 mm audio jack.

All other queries should be directed to the IAEA Press Office; tel. [43-1] 2600-22173.
