In support of a proposed project aimed at strengthening the Colombian Geological Service (SGC), Fernando Mosos, Technical Director of Nuclear Affairs at the Geological Service, and his colleague Julian Nino, joined several IAEA experts in attending a project design meeting. On the margins of the meeting, Mr Mosos shared a few optimistic words with us concerning the proposed project. 

The SGC is a technical and scientific institute affiliated to the Ministry of Mines and Energy, which is itself a part of the National System for Science, Technology and Information (SNCTI). The main objectives of the SGC include conducting basic and applied research on subsoil resources; promoting the follow-up and monitoring of geological threats; performing administrative duties regarding subsoil information; guaranteeing the safe management and disposal of nuclear and radioactive waste within Colombia; coordinating projects regarding nuclear research; and managing the national nuclear reactor. With regards to nuclear matters, in particular, the SGC is tasked with advising the national government on the formulations of policies regarding the safe use, managing and disposing of nuclear materials, and administrating nuclear facilities.
