Enhancing Nuclear Power Plant Life Management and Safety Culture Practices in Latin America

Over the past couple of decades, there has been an increasing emphasis on taking measures to optimize the life cycle of operational nuclear power plants (NPPS). Latin America is no exception. ?

Nuclear safety must be the prime consideration in the operation of a nuclear power plant. Plant managers, operators and regulators must always ensure that plant safety is maintained and, where possible, enhanced during the operating lifetime of a plant.

Representatives from NPP operators and research institutes of Argentina, Brazil and Mexico have met in Vienna from 3 to 5 December 2014 to assess the situation in the region regarding safety culture in nuclear plants, as well as their technical capabilities to implement proper plant life management. As a result of the meeting, a workplan has been established for the period up to 2017. The workplan aims to achieve sound impact and beneficial results for each of the participating Member States.

The meeting took place with the framework of regional technical cooperation project RLA/9/080, 'Enhancing Nuclear Power Plant Life Management and Safety Culture Practices', which aims to support efforts by Latin American NPPs and regulators to enhance plant life management for safe and reliable long term operations, as well as to establish a culture of safety among NPP staff.

The meeting was fully funded by the European Commission, and was implemented within the framework of TC project RLA/9/080.

? ?? Project RLA/9/080 is carried out with funding
by the European Union and the IAEA.
