Gabon signed its second United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) agreement for 2012–2016 on 17 June 2011 in Libreville. The document was co-signed by Magloire Ngambia, the Minister of Economy, and Nadir Hadj-Hammou, UN Resident Coordinator and UNFPA representative in Gabon, together with 14 participating UN organizations. Mr Ali Boussaha, the Director of the Division of Africa, signed the UNDAF document on behalf of the IAEA. This UNDAF is Gabon’s first to include IAEA activities. The document was developed based on the social project of the President of Gabon and the strategic policy framework derived from Gabon’s Letter of Economic and Social Policy (LPES) through a one-year consultative, inclusive and participatory process that includes civil society, government, and international development partners.
Gabon’s new UNDAF addresses six strategic priority areas:
- High-quality information on monitoring Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and economic and social sectors
- Establishment of the legislative and regulatory tools or policy documents in accordance with international declarations, conventions and agreements
- Communities take appropriate measures to enhance their well-being
- Diversification of the national economy
- Sector based strategies and policies for equitable and fair development that benefits the population, especially the most vulnerable
- Access to quality services, education and health
The IAEA, through its technical cooperation programme, will contribute to three of the six strategic priorities, through the improvement of mother-child health care and preparedness for radiological emergencies (Impact 3), crop improvement and animal health (Impact 4), and supporting access to cancer diagnosis and treatment (Impact 6).
