The IAEA hosted a new training course organized by the European Radiation Dosimetry Group (EURADOS) this week, enabling 30 entry-level internal dosimetry professionals to learn about monitoring for occupational intakes of radionuclides.

The course, which is planned to be held every two years, focused on a European Commission Radiation Protection Series guidance document titled Technical Recommendations for Monitoring Individuals for Occupational Intakes of Radionuclides, developed by EURADOS. The document consolidates information from IAEA safety standards and other international standards, technical reports and safety guides, and provides the first comprehensive approach for implementation of the International Commission on Radiological Protection’s most recent guidance on occupational intakes of radionuclides.

The 25-29 March course, developed with contributions from the IAEA, also highlighted best practices and encouraged a harmonised approach to internal dosimetry processing.

?“Thanks to the course, attendees are able to specify monitoring programmes for a wide range of exposure conditions and assess internal doses from measurement results,” said EURADOS Working Group Chair Bastian Breustedt. “The lecturers explained accuracy requirements, quality assurance programmes and criteria for approval and accreditation.”

The course included lectures, hands-on exercises and software demonstrations. The participants, from Australia, Belgium, China, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Iran, Israel, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, the European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy and the IAEA, also visited the IAEA Radiation Safety Technical Services Laboratory.
