IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Technical Cooperation Department of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr Dazhu Yang, has highlighted the role of the media in promoting and disseminating the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.

In a meeting with journalists and national and international media communicators, Mr Yang highlighted Cuba's achievements in nuclear applications in areas such as cancer diagnosis and treatment, pest and disease control, agriculture and environmental monitoring.

Mr Yang also thanked the members of the Network of Cuban Nuclear Communicators (RECNUC) for the coverage made during his visit to Cuba, and for the visibility given to all the technical cooperation activities carried out by the country in partnership with the IAEA.

RECNUC was established in February 26, 2016, following the implementation of a regional IAEA technical cooperation project[1] designed to improve the sustainability of nuclear applications by strengthening communication and partnerships in ARCAL countries. The network aims to increase dissemination of the results and impact of the projects managed by the Agency for Nuclear Energy and Advanced Technologies (AENTA). It is composed of communicators, project managers and journalists specialized in science, technology and the environment.

RECNUC members reported on Mr Yang’s visit from their respective institutions and produced a large amount of material which was issued through a range of communication channels.

Mr. Yang expressed his satisfaction with the visit to Cuba and urged those present to further promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy in all possible ways.
