National Training Course on Plasma Processing of Radioactive Waste: Engineering, Flue Gas and Solid Wastes Treatment

From 21 to 25 September, a national training course on plasma processing was held in San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina, with the support of the IAEA and the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) of Argentina, as part of a national technical cooperation project on Treating Radioactive Waste (AGR/9/013).

Held at the Bariloche Atomic Centre (CAB), the meeting aimed to promote both an exchange of information and experiences related to the plasma processing of radioactive waste. Another objective was to discuss aspects related to the design of plasma torches and their uses. Moreover, the meeting provided the opportunity to explore the optimization of reaction chambers, the treatment of volatile and combustible gases, and the conservation of the environment.

In addition to an IAEA expert, the meeting was attended by 35 participants, including specialists from the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation; Belgoprocess, a Belgian company; and FSUE RADON (Federal State Unitary Entreprise), a Russian scientific and research centre devoted to the decontamination of radioactive waste and the protection of the environment. The meeting was also attended by researchers from the three domestic atomic research centres which the CNEA manages: The Centro Atómico Constituyentes (CAC), the Centro Atómico Ezeiza (CAE), and the Centro Atómico Bariloche (CAB).
