The regional training course on the assessment of occupational exposures due to external sources of radiation took place in Bogor, Indonesia, from 2-6 June 2014. Altogether, 18 participants from 14 Member States in the Asia and the Pacific region attended the training course. The participants were from the following Member States: Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Iraq, Kuwait, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand, Viet Nam and Yemen.

The training course, supported by funds provided by the European Union (EU), was held within the framework of the IAEA's regional technical cooperation project RAS/9/064, 'Strengthening and Harmonizing National Capabilities for Response to Nuclear and Radiological Emergencies'.

The main purpose of the course was to provide the participants with the basic knowledge and practical skills essential for the implementation of the relevant IAEA Safety Standards related to the assessment of occupational exposure due to external sources of radiation; to familiarise principles, concepts, methods and equipment used for external dosimetry, with emphasis on the application to occupational radiation protection; to enhance participants' awareness about the protection and safety requirements of the International Basis Safety Standards (BSS)-GSR Part-3 in occupational exposures; to present and discuss the national capabilities for assessment of occupational exposure due to external sources of radiation; and to help participants to be able to initiate appropriate national training programmes.

The training course included lectures, presentations, interactive group discussions, information exchange among participants, demonstrations and technical visits. The course supported the participating Member States in improving their national programmes on individual monitoring for external sources of radiation as part of occupational monitoring programme and led to strengthened capacity building.

As part of a larger European Union initiative to enhance nuclear safety around the world, the EU supports several IAEA technical cooperation activities through the Nuclear Safety Cooperation Instrument (NSCI) including five TC projects in Asia and the Pacific region related to safety issues.
