Technical Cooperation Side Events at the 69th IAEA General Conference

Each year in September, the IAEA welcomes thousands of national representatives and technical experts to its?General Conference to jointly consider, and to provide input to, the Agency's ongoing work, budget and priorities. For the Department of Technical Cooperation, the annual conference offers an opportunity to present the latest achievements, explore nuclear technologies and identify emerging priorities for the technical cooperation (TC) programme.

The Department of Technical Cooperation will host three side events on the margins of the 69th General Conference — scheduled from 15 to 19 September — drawing attention to the IAEA’s efforts to enhance livestock and agricultural productivity, to monitor and reduce marine plastic pollution and to inspire the next generation of nuclear leaders through youth education. In addition to these side events, delegates from the four technical cooperation regional cooperative agreements —?AFRA,?ARCAL,?ARASIA?and?RCA?— will hold meetings ahead of and during the week of the General Conference.

NUTEC PLASTICS: ACHIEVEMENTS, PROGRESS AND PROSPECTS

This event will highlight the progress achieved since the 2021 launch of the IAEA’s flagship initiative to address the global challenge of plastic pollution, NUTEC Plastics. It will provide comprehensive updates on both the upcycling and marine monitoring components of the initiative. The event will also examine future steps, including the advancement of Technology Readiness Levels in pilot countries and the establishment of a Marine Global Monitoring Network by 2026. It will foster collaboration and the sharing of insights and will reinforce global commitment to addressing plastic pollution through innovative and science-based solutions.

This event will be held on?Wednesday,?17 September 2025, from 2.00 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. in Conference Room CR4, C Building, seventh floor.

ADVANCING FOOD SECURITY IN AFRICA THROUGH THE ATOMS4FOOD INITIATIVE

This side event will highlight how nuclear science and technology contribute to transforming agri-food systems in Africa through the Atoms4Food initiative. It will showcase successful applications in soil and water management, crop improvement, and food safety. Experts and policymakers will share best practices and discuss integrated solutions that enhance food security and nutrition across the continent.

This event will be held on Thursday, 18 September 2025, from 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. in Conference Room M4, M Building, ground floor.

SHAPING THE FUTURE: EMPOWERING WOMEN AND YOUTH IN NUCLEAR SCIENCE ACROSS AFRICA AND ASIA THROUGH COMPETITIONS

Encouraging young people to pursue careers in nuclear science and technology can help countries maximize the benefits of atomic energy for development. Through the TC programme, the IAEA works with national stakeholders to craft academic programmes, to launch awareness campaigns and to otherwise engage young, aspiring nuclear scientists around the world. This side event will showcase how initiatives such as the International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO) and other innovative competitions inspire the next generation to pursue careers in nuclear science and technology. The event will feature keynote addresses, panel discussions, and interactive exchanges, highlighting success stories from around the world.

It will also spotlight pioneering efforts from the African region to engage more female students in nuclear science and technology, serving as a model for other regions. Special segments will include am award ceremony, recognizing winning students from Africa, as well as the handover of the INSO globe to the host country of INSO 2026, symbolizing the continued legacy of international collaboration and youth engagement in nuclear science. Discussions will explore how such platforms promote inclusivity, foster collaboration, cultivate critical thinking, and ignite innovation among youth worldwide.

Throughout the weeklong conference, staff from the Department of Technical Cooperation will be available at a booth within the IAEA exhibition space in the M building of the Vienna International Centre. The latest outreach materials and publications available at the booth will showcase how the programme functions, providing examples of impact around the world and across scientific disciplines. Conference participants ?are invited to visit the booth, interact with experts and TC staff, and to share photos of their visit to the exhibition on social media, using the?#IAEATC?and?#IAEAGC hashtags.
