The workshop, jointly organized by the IAEA and the Government of the United Arab Emirates through the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation within the framework of a regional project, aimed to develop the capability of the participants to act as trainers.

Special emphasis was placed on developing the soft skills of the participants in topics such as preparing and delivering presentations, designing courses and planning lessons. The participants also learned about technical aspects such as the role and duties and the training needs of radiation protection officers, as well as the IAEA syllabus for radiation protection officers. The participating radiation protection specialists have now the necessary competence and skills to train other radiation protection officers back in their countries, by transferring the knowledge acquired during the workshop.

Background

The application of technologies that make use of ionizing radiation continues to expand all around the world, bringing a wide range of benefits. Nuclear technology has become essential for many common applications in medicine, industry, agriculture, water resource management and research, as well as power generation. The technology is very powerful, but can potentially be harmful if not properly used. Safety and security are therefore key preconditions when using nuclear technology.

Building competence in radiation safety is fundamental to the establishment of an effective, sustainable national radiation safety infrastructure. High-level education and training in radiation safety for regulators, future decision makers, and qualified experts and radiation protection officers is essential to for national safety infrastructure.

The IAEA, through a number of national and regional projects, helps Member States to develop, establish and strengthen their national radiation safety infrastructures. Such support includes the provision of education and training to build and enhance necessary individual and national competencies in radiation safety.
