With IAEA Support, the Intercontinental Nuclear Institute Invites Aapplications to its 2016 Edition

This year, under its Peaceful Uses Initiative, the IAEA will support the participation of 25 fellows in the Intercontinental Nuclear Institute's 2016 edition.

The Intercontinental Nuclear Institute (INI) is a four-week-long, hands-on training programme developed cooperatively by the U.S.-Czech Civil Nuclear Cooperation Centre (CNCC) in Prague and the University of Massachusetts-Lowell (UML) in the United States, with technical oversight of the IAEA. The programme includes guest lecture series, nuclear facilities visits, and mentoring by prominent research scientists and lead experts from the nuclear industry. Since 2015, INI has provided graduate students and young professionals alike with information and training regarding the best practices for the operation of a safe, sustainable nuclear power programme. The Institute’s capacity-building curriculum is designed to comply with the highest level of safety and security, to consider the long-term needs for nuclear power in the energy mix of participants’ countries, to teach and impart the best practices in facility design and operation, and to promote the long-term availability of both physical and human resources. By offering technical visits of nuclear facilities in both the United States and Europe, INI Fellows also benefit from a trans-Atlantic experience, observing differing technologies and work methods at play.

INI 2016 is now open to applications from graduate students or young professionals with (i) a degree in science or engineering, other than nuclear (primary audience) or (ii) a degree in nuclear sciences, but with no or limited practical experience in the nuclear industry, who have an ambition to build practical experience in the nuclear industry. The training will take place from 27 June to 22 July, and will be jointly held at the ?ti?ín Castle outside of Prague, Czech Republic and at the University of Massachusetts Lowell in the United States.

This year, the IAEA will support, under its Peaceful Uses Initiative, the participation of 25 INI 2016 fellows. Qualified candidates who can demonstrate a keen interest in working in the nuclear energy sector and are nationals of target IAEA Member States in the TC Europe region (i.e., Armenia, Belarus, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, and Ukraine) are encouraged to get in contact with the designated National Liaison Officer (NLO) of their respective countries. For the contact information of NLOs in the Europe region, please email the Contact Point for the Division of Europe. For candidates to be considered for IAEA support, complete nomination forms for fellowship should be endorsed by relevant national authorities and sent to the IAEA through official channels no later than Friday 24 March 2016.

INI 2015 was supported by the IAEA’s Peaceful Uses Initiative through an ongoing, regional technical cooperation (TC) project*. The regional project aims to support Member States in the Europe region in developing long-term, national nuclear energy strategies based on the highest standards of safety and security, projected long-term needs, and without the risk of proliferation. INI is planned to be repeated annually.
