The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will send an international expert review mission on remediation to Japan later this month to review the implementation of remediation activities in areas affected by the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, and provide advice to address associated challenges.

At the request of the Government of Japan, the Follow-up IAEA International Mission on Remediation of Large Contaminated Areas Off-site the Fukushima Daiichi NPS will take place from 14 to 21 October 2013. The 16-person team will consist of international experts and IAEA staff.

The mission is the follow-up to the IAEA International Mission on Remediation of Large Contaminated Areas Off-site the Fukushima Daiichi NPS, conducted in October 2011.

With the main purpose of evaluating the progress of on-going remediation work in Japan and providing advice to address remediation challenges, the mission team will meet relevant governmental authorities, including the Ministry of the Environment. From 16 to 18 October it will visit remediation sites in Fukushima Prefecture.

On the last day of the mission, a report summarizing the mission team's findings and advice will be submitted to the Government of Japan, which will make it publicly available.
