E-learning Course

This e-learning module addresses the deuterium oxide dose-to-mother technique used to assess the intake of human milk by breastfed babies as well as water intake from sources other than human milk by the baby. The module is based on information in IAEA Human Health Series No. 7Stable Isotope Technique to Assess Intake of Human Milk in Breastfed Infants.

This course is based on the 2015 edition of the e-learning module on Assessing intake of Human Milk in Breastfed infants. Please note the e-learning module is currently undergoing a major content update to be released in due course.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

  • Define the importance of determining the intake of human milk in breastfed infants
  • Describe how human milk intake by breastfed infants can be quantified
  • Identify the steps and apply the deuterium oxide dose-to-mother technique
  • Define and discuss the basic principles of the deuterium oxide dose-to-mother technique
  • Describe what procedures are involved in the method
  • Be aware of the critical steps in the procedures
