This training course strengthens Member States’ capacity to make effective decisions regarding public protective actions in the event of an emergency involving actual or projected severe fuel damage in a light water reactor or spent fuel pool. It is based on the IAEA publication Actions to Protect the Public in an Emergency due to Severe Conditions at a Light Water Reactor (EPR-NPP PPA 2013).

The course targets decision-makers, local and facility emergency planners, emergency response coordinators and emergency managers.

The five-day programme focuses on how to make decisions to protect the public, using nuclear power plant conditions and environmental measurements made after a release of radioactive material as a basis. It also looks at ways to help the public understand the radiological health hazard.
