Global Network of Isotopes in Rivers (GNIR)

The Global Network of Isotopes in Rivers (GNIR) is a worldwide voluntary environmental observation programme initiated in 2002 dedicated to the collection, compilation and dissemination of isotopic assays of Earth’s river waters.

Data collections include oxygen and hydrogen isotopes of river waters from around the world, as well as isotopic measurements of common nutrient pollutants like nitrate. Isotopes of river water are used to assist in water resource management, to help to evaluate water balance and human impacts at large and small catchment scales, to quantify ground and surface water interactions, climatic and land-use impacts, and to determine the origin and fate of common water pollutants.

GNIR data are available through the WISER portal?(Water Isotope System for Data Analysis, Visualization and Electronic Retrieval). Participation in the GNIR is possible by registering on the?Isotope Hydrology Collaboration Site.
