1st African Conference on Clinical Nuclear Medicine & Medical Physics

The conference was organized by the Sudanese Atomic Energy Commission (SAEC) in cooperation with the Radiation and Isotope Center, Khartoum (RICK) and the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Biology of Gezira. Keynote speeches were delivered by the Honourable Minister of Health and the State Minister for Science and Technology. The objective of this two-day scientific event was to maximize exposure to innovative methods and practice in clinical nuclear medicine and medical physics, and to give the opportunity to both professions to review and plan joint activities.

The objective of this two-day scientific event was to maximize exposure to innovative methods and practice in clinical nuclear medicine and medical physics, and to give the opportunity to both professions to review and plan joint activities.

More than 30 African experts from AFRA Member States participating in the above-mentioned projects attended the conference. Two prominent international experts in Nuclear Medicine and Medical Physics, respectively, also delivered lectures during the conference.

The Conference included the presentation of scientific abstracts and lectures covering among others: therapeutic applications with unsealed radioisotopes; SPECT-CT in cancer; SPECT and SPECT-CT in Nuclear Cardiology; local production of diagnosis and therapeutic radiopharmaceuticals; education of medical physicists in nuclear medicine; Quality Assurance for nuclear medicine instrumentation and Medical Physics in nuclear medicine.

The roundtable discussions focused on the current status of clinical nuclear medicine implementation in AFRA Member States with emphasis on SPECT imaging, the recognition of medical physics in nuclear medicine and its benefits for quality nuclear medicine services, and the need to sensitize national authorities to support nuclear medicine and medical physics as an integral component of the national plans for the management of cancer, cardio-vascular diseases and other metabolic disorders.

IAEA was represented in the conference by the Programme Management Officer (TCAF) and the Technical Officers (NAHU) assigned to the above mentioned projects.
