AEA Director General Yukiya Amano welcomes the conclusion of a new START Treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States. He also welcomes the disarmament efforts reflected in the 2010 U.S. Nuclear Posture Review (NPR).

The Director General said that "Reducing the role and numbers of nuclear weapons is a positive step towards a safe and peaceful world free of nuclear weapons which can impact positively on nuclear non-proliferation efforts."

Director General Amano added "I am also encouraged by recognition in the NPR of the need to strengthen IAEA safeguards, and the commitment expressed by the United States to expanding financial support for the Agency."
