IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano and the United States Resident Representative, H.E. Mr. Joseph E. Macmanus, exchanged diplomatic notes on the entry into force of the Third Amendment to the Agreement for Co-operation between the United States and the Agency on 6 June 2014.

The Agreement allows the IAEA to provide nuclear material originating from the United States to IAEA Member States under the trilateral project and supply agreements (PSAs) with the IAEA.

This Agreement directly advances one of the Agency's statutorily-mandated functions, to "act as an intermediary for the supply of materials, equipment, or facilities by one member of the Agency for another."

With the exchange of diplomatic notes today, this Agreement has been extended for another 40 years.

In November 2013, the Board had authorized the IAEA Director General to conclude an agreement on the Third Amendment to the Agreement for Cooperation between the Agency and the United States of America.

28 IAEA Member States have received material pursuant to this Agreement since its entry into force in 1959.
