General Conference Day 1 Highlights

Following the election Ambassador Filippo Formica?as President of the 59th IAEA General Conference, the Plenary approved the application for membership by three countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and Turkmenistan. Director General Yukiya Amano then gave an opening statement?in which he reviewed the year’s highlights and defined priorities for the coming year.

Following the election Ambassador Filippo Formica as President of the 59th IAEA General Conference, the Plenary approved the application for membership by three countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados and Turkmenistan. Director General Yukiya Amano then gave an opening statement in which he reviewed the year’s highlights and defined priorities for the coming year. Also on Monday, the IAEA designated the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) as International Centre based on Research Reactors (ICERR).

Mr Amano announced that preparation for the construction of new IAEA nuclear science laboratories near the Austrian town of Seibersdorf has started, and he unveiled the small scale model of the new labs.

The following side events also took place on Monday:

  • INSAG Forum 2015, a yearly advisory group meeting which stressed the importance of fully considering natural external events in the siting of nuclear power plants
  • The Arab Network of Nuclear Regulatory Plenary Meeting addressing the urgency of capacity building programmes in the Arab region.
  • The Forum of Nuclear Regulatory bodies in Africa Plenary which reviewed achievements and introduced the group's action plan for 2016-2012 to its members.
  • Plenary Meeting of the Ibero-American Forum of Radiological and Nuclear Regulatory Agencies (FORO) which discussed its strategic planning and programme, and its cooperation with the Agency.
  • Advancing Radiation Protection in the Light of the Revised Basic Safety Standards (BSS) which gave an introduction to the International BSS and EURATOM BSS, a case study on how to ensure implementation in practice, focusing on radiation protection in medicine, and discussed a way forward towards a coherent international radiation protection regime.

Highlighted exhibit for the day featured an educational nuclear power reactor simulator with live demo sessions and hands-on experiments that Conference participants could try.
